About Horizons District

Meet me in Horizons District.

Situated just east of I-35 and south of I-40 along the Oklahoma River, Horizons District is anchored by OKANA Resort & Indoor Waterpark and the internationally-acclaimed First Americans Museum.

In Horizons District, you’ll find an endless world of insight, movement, entertainment and connection. Whether you’re learning about First Americans culture, relaxing by the pool, enjoying the culinary arts or trekking the trails, there’s always more to explore.

Long before it became a hub of world-class destinations and an immersive experience into Indigenousculture and art, this area was home to a different kind of Chickasaw enterprise—one that played a pivotal role in Oklahoma’s history.

In the late 1800s, Chickasaw cattleman and entrepreneur Montford Johnson established a successful ranching enterprise along the Chisholm Trail.

Johnson’s vast holdings encompassed much of central Oklahoma, including land that is now part of the Horizons District. Learn more about Montford Johnson, the Chickasaw Rancher, at https://www.chickasawrancher.com/About.

Johnson and his family had a role in establishing eight towns across Oklahoma. This ranching legacy contributed to the region’s early economic development, bringing commerce and growth to the area in the aftermath of the Civil War. Today, the land that once supported a thriving cattle operation has evolved into a destination for cultural tourism.

The development of the Horizons District is about honoring the past while creating new opportunities for the future.
